Neiman Group Helps Land 'Top 5' Ranking for Pennsylvania's Official Election Web Site

Pew Center on the States Gives VotesPA.com High Marks for its Usability

HARRISBURG (December 3, 2008) - Pennsylvania's official election web site - VotesPA.com - was awarded a Top 5 ranking nationally by the Pew Center on the States. Designed by Neiman Group for the Pennsylvania Department of State, the Pew Center rated the site fourth out of 50 states and the District of Columbia for its ease of navigation and homepage design.

"With the historic number of first-time voters in Pennsylvania, we wanted to make sure all voters could find the information they needed quickly and easily, with a minimum of searching and clicking," said Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro A. Cortes. "This report is confirmation of the hard work we put into making a user-friendly Web site. I'd like to thank our communications partners at Neiman Group whose creative talents allowed Pennsylvania voters to access important election information with ease."

Since VotesPA went live in April of 2008, it had 850,978 unique visits and nearly 4.25 million page views.

Dan Hughes of Neiman Group in Philadelphia, who led the team that designed VotesPA.com, said the design process started with a clear vision—to make the site as easy as possible for every Pennsylvanian to get the information they needed in order to be an informed voter.

"Because Secretary Cortes understands that technology can be a powerful tool for all voters, we were encouraged to design a site that went beyond a traditional state government Web site," said Hughes. "So not only does the site give you the essentials you need to vote, it also allows you to interact, by providing you with exact polling place information and the opportunity to opt-in to receive texts sent directly to your cell phone reminding you of key election dates."

The site is easy-to-navigate and has features/sections including general background about voting and elections, how to register to vote and register online, where to vote, specifics about how to vote, how to prepare for election day, a reminder of election-related dates sent via email or text message, county contacts and web sites, applications and forms and more.
